The project includes a 13.5-kilometer Babusar Tunnel and will be constructed in phases.

Officials say the 172-kilometer motorway will shorten travel distances, improve safety, and enhance access to northern regions while supporting trade and tourism. The route is expected to play an important role in Pakistan’s broader connectivity plans under regional economic initiatives.

China and Pakistan are already connected through the historic Karakoram Highway via the Khunjerab Pass, but the new motorway is intended to provide a faster and safer alternative for travelers and commercial traffic.
