US Reportedly Plans New Restrictions on Nvidia and AMD AI Chip Exports to Chinese Subsidiaries Abroad

Posted by

The United States is reportedly preparing new rules that would block advanced AI chips from reaching overseas subsidiaries of Chinese companies, tightening restrictions on Beijing’s access to cutting-edge technology.

According to multiple reports, the U.S. government is drafting new export-control measures that would prevent advanced artificial-intelligence chips made by NVIDIA and Advanced Micro Devices from being shipped to Chinese-owned companies and subsidiaries located outside China

The proposed rules are part of Washington’s broader effort to limit China’s access to high-performance computing technology that could support military, surveillance, and advanced AI development. Officials reportedly fear that Chinese companies have been obtaining restricted chips through overseas affiliates and cloud-computing networks.

The restrictions would expand existing export controls that already limit direct shipments of advanced AI processors to China. Analysts say the move could affect global supply chains and further intensify the ongoing technology competition between Washington and Beijing.

Both Nvidia and AMD have previously warned that tighter export restrictions could impact revenues from international markets, while U.S. officials argue the measures are necessary for national-security reasons.

The reported measures are still under discussion and may change before being formally implemented. Final export-control rules have not yet been officially announced by U.S. authorities.
