Most Indonesians Have Never Traveled Abroad, Reports Suggest

Posted by

Despite being one of the world’s largest countries by population, a huge majority of people in Indonesia reportedly have never traveled outside their homeland.

Recent discussions and travel-related statistics suggest that approximately 92–98% of Indonesian citizens may have never traveled abroad. Experts say factors such as income levels, the country’s vast geography, domestic tourism opportunities, and passport ownership rates contribute to the trend.

Indonesia is made up of thousands of islands and offers diverse cultures, landscapes, and destinations internally, meaning many citizens travel domestically instead of internationally. Analysts also note that international travel remains expensive for a large portion of the population.
