A new U.S. law backed by President Trump introduces strict penalties against AI-generated explicit deepfake content and pressures social media platforms to act quickly.

Donald Trump has signed a new law making the creation and distribution of deepfake pornography a federal criminal offense in the United States.

Under the legislation, individuals found guilty could face up to two years in prison. The law also requires social media companies to remove such content within 48 hours after being notified, or risk action from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

Officials say the move is aimed at protecting victims from non-consensual AI-generated explicit content, which has rapidly increased with advances in artificial intelligence technology.
